Diagnostic mammography is an X-ray examination of the breasts. This test is performed when the doctor, during the clinical examination, finds any unusual lumps, tenderness, nipple discharge or any change in the skin of the breasts. The mammogram confirms whether the lumps are benign or cancerous and indicates the need for treatment.
You will be asked to stand in front of an x-ray machine and the technologist will place one of the breasts on a plastic plate. Another plate will firmly hold the breast from above. The plates will hold the breast still, while the x-ray is being taken. The same steps will be performed to take a side view of the breast. The other breast will be x-rayed in the same manner. Avoid wearing any kind of jewels. Carry your previous mammogram reports. Do not use deodorant, perfume or powder as they show up as spots on the x-ray. Standard diagnostic mammography takes about 10-15 minutes.
Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to produce pictures of the organs and structures inside the body. It is a safe, painless and a noninvasive procedure and is used to examine various parts such as brain, hips, uterus, to check for the health of the baby.
You will be asked to lie down on an examination table. The patients may be turned in order to improve the quality of the images. The radiologist will apply warm water-based gel to the area of the body being studied. The transducer is placed on the body and moved back and forth over the area to be scanned until the desired images are captured. There is usually no discomfort as the transducer is pressed against the area being examined. However, if scanning is performed over an area of tenderness, you may feel pressure or minor pain from the transducer. Most ultrasound examinations are completed within 30 minutes, although more extensive exams may take up to an hour.
Magnetic Imaging Resonance (MRI) is a test that uses magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to create pictures of organs inside the body. MRI is also shows the problems that’s cannot be detected in other imaging techniques.
During the MRI test, the area of the body to be studied is placed inside a machine that contains a strong magnet. Pictures from an MRI scan are digital images that can be saved and stored on a computer and can be studied later. MRI is used to find problems such as tumors, bleeding, injury, blood vessel diseases, or infection. It also may be done to provide more information about a condition seen on an X-ray, ultrasound scan, or CT scan. Contrast material is used during MRI for abnormal tissues to be seen more clearly. The procedure takes about 45-60 minutes to complete.
Biopsy is another method performed to confirm the test results. It is a sample of the tissue taken from the body to examine it more closely. A doctor recommends for biopsy when he feels that a certain part of the body tissue is not normal. The abnormality in a particular area may be noticed in the imaging techniques or during a physical examination. There are four types of biopsy used to check for breast cancer. They are:
