Dental X-rays

Dental X-rays are also called Dental Radiographs which are the essential part of any Dental care treatment. It allows the Dentist to see a detailed and clear picture of the teeth. A Dental X-ray is a diagnostic test which allows the doctor to diagnose the potential Dental problem about to arise.

There are two types of Dental X-rays. They are:

  • Intraoral X-ray is taken inside the mouth.
  • Extraoral X-ray is taken outside the mouth.

Various types of Dental X-rays that are available are:

  • Bitewing is a type of X-ray that allows the Dentist to examine the crowns of the upper and lower teeth.
  • Panoramic is a type of X-ray that gives the Dentist a clear and larger view of the entire mouth.
  • Cone beam computerized tomography is a type of X-ray that provides a 3-D view, for the Dentist to have a better view of the spacing of teeth and adjacent structures.
  • Occlusal is a type of X-ray that allows the Dentist to see whether the upper teeth and corresponding lower teeth fit together when the jaw is closed.
  • Periapical X-ray allows the Dentist to examine the entire tooth and also the surrounding bone.

Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal treatment is performed by the Dentist to repair or save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. Once a tooth is infected, cracked or decayed it is important to remove the infected teeth and the area is cleaned. The space that is open is then filled and sealed. Root Canal Therapy is done when the pulp which is made up of nerves and blood vessels in the tooth becomes damaged or infected.

The Root Canal treatment requires one or two visits to the Dentist. The first step in the procedure is to take an X-ray of the teeth to locate the signs of infection in the surrounding bone. The Dentist will then use local anaesthesia to numb the area to the studied. The doctor will use a rubber sheet to keep the area dry and free from saliva. A hole is drilled into the tooth and the bacteria and debris from it. Water or sodium hypochlorite is used to flush out the debris.

Dental Impression

A Dental Impression is nothing but the impression or replica of the teeth and is an important step in creating an intraoral image of the mouth. A Dental Impression is recommended by the Dentist to evaluate the patient’s mouth, to check the bit or to create a mouth guard for the patient. A few common reasons why Dental Impressions are taken are:

  • To make bridges or fixed partial dentures
  • To make a custom mouthguard for protection
  • To analyze the relationship between your jaws
  • To make a conventional Dental crown
  • To make custom teeth whitening trays

The Dentist or Hygienist will fill horseshoe-shaped trays with a soft, gelatin-like material and place them over your upper or lower teeth. After a few minutes, the trays are removed to create a Dental cast of your mouth. The Dentist may ask you to bite on a soft material to get a Dental cast of your bite. He/she will then evaluate the Dental problems of the person.

Dental Filling

Dental Filling is a method to restore a tooth that has been decayed or damaged. This procedure helps to bring the damaged tooth back to its normal function and shape. In this procedure the Dentist first extracts the decayed tooth, cleans the infected area and then fills the cleaned-out cavity with a filling material. Filling prevents further decay as it closes the open spaces where the bacteria usually enter. Materials used for fillings include gold, porcelain, a composite resin (tooth-coloured fillings), and an amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc). There are different types of fillings. They are:

  • Gold filling
  • Silver (Amalgam) filling
  • Composite or plastic resin
  • Porcelain filling

The material used for filling is based on the extent of the repair and the cost.

FOLLOW THESE TIPS - HEALTHY TEETH FOR LIFE

BRUSH TWICE A DAY: Brushing twice a day will prevent the formation of acid buildup by bacteria due to the breakdown of food. Choose a toothbrush with a small head for better access to back teeth. Soft bristles are kinder on your gums. Brush the surface of your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria, which might cause bad breath.

FLOSS YOUR TEETH DAILY: Flossing helps in the removal of food particles that are stuck in between your teeth, which brushing usually cannot. Flossing allows you to reach deep between your teeth where the toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Floss your teeth at least once a day.

LIMIT ACIDIC DRINKS & SUGARY FOODS: The food acids present in acidic drinks soften the tooth and deplete the minerals present in the tooth enamel. This causes holes such as cavities in the teeth. In some cases, the teeth may be eaten right down to the gum. Too much sugar is not good as the bacteria present in the Dental plaque changes the sugars into acid.

REGULAR CHECKUPS: Visiting your Dentist regularly is very important to prevent various Dental problems such as toothache, bleeding gums etc. You should go for a total hygiene checkup at least twice a year. These checkups will also prevent you from future Dental problems.
