Wherever you turn you will find commercials, ads and banner displaying or showcasing different fairness cream, wrinkle-free creams, moisturizing lotions, sun-screens etc. Time and again all of us heard so many tips to take care of our skin but very rarely we give a thought about the incredible role our skin plays, it gives a proper shape to our body. It is impossible to imagine oneself without skin; this amazing thin layer spreads on your entire body and keeps all your internal organs in place. Skin grows with you, protects you, helps you feel touch and pain, protects you from hot and cold weather and from dust and acts as a barrier between you and your environment.

What is dermatitis?

Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin. The skin with dermatitis may appear red, swollen, and sore. Sometimes, small blisters may also appear on the skin. Allergic reaction and skin irritation causes dermatitis.

Types of Dermatitis

Dermatitis can be acute or chronic.

Acute dermatitis is usually caused by allergy or irritation to specific substance. The resultant rashes may appear immediately and subside in few hours or a day or two. These usually do not require any treatment, and the rashes may subside on their own. The discomfort can be managed by applying antihistamine lotions or soothing creams.

Chronic dermatitis usually persists for a long period of time. Hands and feet are the most affected due to continuous exposure to the allergens or irritants. Chronic dermatitis usually causes cracks and blisters leading way to superimposed bacterial infection. The treatment of chronic dermatitis depends on the causative factor and the severity of symptoms. In addition to the antihistamine local application, local or systemic antibiotics may form an important part of the treatment.

Chronic dermatitis can be prevented through avoiding exposure to known allergens and irritants.

Based on other causes, dermatitis can also be classified as:

Atopic dermatitis is caused by allergic reaction to a trigger.

Contact dermatitis is caused as a result of physical contact with an allergen that induces a hypersensitivity reaction.

Xerotic dermatitis is mostly ceased in winter season due to excessive dryness of the skin.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis causes white, greasy flakes on the scalp, eyebrows, and face.

Sometimes you might have noticed that your skin becomes dry and lifeless when you are going through a hard time, and then it vanishes when you relax yourself. Being stressful releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, this increases the activity of oil secreting glands under the skin and results in skin pop-ups, these hormones narrows your blood vessels and limits the blood supply to your skin leaving it dry. If you are stressed-out for a long time your skin might become pale, glow less and you might notice wrinkles around your eyes, mouth and fore-head.

Protecting your skin

Quit smoking, if you smoke. Smoking damages your skin by blocking the tiny blood vessel in the skin. It harms the collagen and elastin fiber that keeps the skin rigid and elastic, thereby causing wrinkles and making it look older. Smoking also depletes the skin of oxygen and vitamin-A, that is necessary for a healthy glowing skin.

Having healthy diet is another way to keep your skin healthy. However, there are only limited researches on the food that is best to your skin. Include fish, ground flax seed, carrot, sweet potato, broccoli, spinach, hazelnuts and almonds in your diet. Few other healthy foods that favor healthy skin are tomatoes, beans, peas, apricots, blue-berries, green leafy vegetables, and yellow vegetables. It is also said that food rich in fat and carbohydrate causes early aging of skin. Therefore, it is better to focus on a complete healthy diet like drinking enough water, consuming lots of fruits and vegetables, choosing low-fat diet, going for whole grain breads and pasta, than focusing on a diet only for healthy skin.

The easiest way to take care of skin is to clean it as often as possible. Use warm water for shower and use a mild soap that suits your skin. Use cleanser to wash your face as it clears up all the dirt. It’s better to take bath twice daily or atleast to wash your face after coming back home. Remember never to scrub your skin very hard as it might remove essential oils and make the skin dry.
