08-Mar-2018

CECURA (Centre of Excellence for Continence & Uro-Gynaecology Rehabilitation & Assessment) is all about enhancing the self-esteem of women through a holistic approach to continence

Chennai, March 8th, 2018: Gleneagles Global Health City, the largest facility of Gleneagles Global Hospitals, a Parkway Pantai enterprise, on the occasion of International Women’s day, launched CECURA (Centre of Excellence for Continence & Uro-Gynaecology Rehabilitation & Assessment), one of the few such centres in the country. CECURA is spear headed by Dr. Meera Ragavan, HOD Department of UroGynecology, Gleneagles Global Health City, and her team of experts. Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, IAS, Principal Secretary, Health & Welfare, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, who was the Chief Guest, was present at Gleneagles Global Health City along with other Guests of honour such as Prof. Mohamed Rela, Chairman and Director, Institute of Liver Disease and Transplantation, Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Prof. Mathangi Ramakrishnan, HOD – Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Retd.), Kilpauk Medical College Chennai, Dr K Ravindranath, Chairman & Founder, Gleneagles Global Hospitals and Mr. Ramesh Krishnan, CEO – India Operations Division, Parkway Pantai

Urinary Incontinence affects approximately 57% of women between 45 and 64 years of age, and 14% of the general population. Urinary Incontinence usually occurs due to increased intra-abdominal pressure such as Pregnancy, Pulmonary disease (smokers cough), Constipation (straining), Lifting at work or home, Exercise and Obesity to mention a few. Urinary Incontinence is a common condition that is rarely life threatening, but is one of the major causes of embarrassment and anxiety among the female population of our country and has adverse effects on their quality of life. Urinary Incontinence is often the source of shame, embarrassment, depression, worry, feeling old and of self-imposed social exclusion. Even coughing, sneezing, laughing or a little physical effort can be a cause for worry as they can provoke a leak or dribbling. Looking for toilets becomes a constant preoccupation. Even the WHO recognizes incontinence as an international health concern as 70% of patients do not seek professional help due to the combination of embarrassment and the belief that Urinary Incontinence is a natural consequence of ageing and childbirth.

CECURA is a 24X7 state-of-the-art Uro-gynecology unit in a tertiary care hospital setting manned by a team of experts equipped to handle any and every kind of Uro-gynecology problems. CECURA looks at enhancing the self-esteem of women through a holistic approach to continence. CECURA will inculcate confidence in continence as the first line of intervention as it is recommended to be the least invasive in nature, such as the case in pelvic muscle exercises, which will improve quality of life and help women gain self-efficacy. CECURA will also provide a comprehensive care (surgical and non-surgical) and solutions to all females who need assistance such as 24x7 experts on call to handle any and every complication, a dedicated pelvic muscle strengthening exercise unit, bladder control training, dietary counselling and medical management all under one roof.

“Incontinence can shake someone’s self-confidence and cause them to pull away from their social and personal relationships. Discussing leakage issues with a partner can be difficult and often leave one feeling too embarrassed to share their feelings, fears, and frustrations. It is not surprising then that it has been called the silent epidemic. Although the prevalence of Urinary Incontinence increases with age it should not be considered a normal part of the aging process”, said Dr. Meera Ragavan, HOD Department of Uro-Gynaecology, Gleneagles Global Health City. “I am extremely pleased to be able to run CECURA and provide a platform that can not only provide treatment but counselling as well. CECURA, a first of its kind in the city, will help us to spread awareness amongst women that Urinary Incontinence is very much treatable and nothing to be ashamed off. We hope that this message spreads across the country to physicians and general practitioners who will be better equipped to guide or treat patients more efficiently as they are usually the first line of treatment for many patients especially in smaller towns and cities.”, added Dr. Meera Ragavan.

Mr. Ramesh Krishnan, CEO – India Operations Division, Parkway Pantai, said “As a responsible service provider in the private healthcare space, Gleneagles has always had it as a part of its strategy to impart awareness in socially sensitive but important aspects of community wellbeing. In this series we found it apt on this women’s day to address an important but often neglected element which denies our mothers and sisters the respect and dignity they truly deserve. Very proud to have had the opportunity to launch CECURA. Happy women’s day!”
