Thoracentesis is a medical procedure which involves use of image guidance and needle to drain the accumulated fluid from the lungs. Accumulation of fluid in the lungs may occur in the conditions such as tumors, pneumonia, congestive heart failure, and chronic lung disease.
A local anesthetic is administered to numb the area before the procedure. During the procedure, a needle is inserted through the skin between the ribs on the back. Once the needle reaches the pleural space where the fluid gets accumulated, a syringe or suction is used to remove the fluid from the pleural space. Finally, the opening in the skin is covered with a sterile dressing.
