Laser surgery is one of the most popular surgeries used to correct vision. This surgery is performed in people who have eye related problems like the nearsightedness or farsightedness. All the laser correction surgeries performed work on shaping the cornea. Cornea is the white, clear part in the eye. The light travels through it and focuses the image on the retina which is present back of the eye.
During the eye surgery an instrument called the microkeratome is used to create a thin flap on the cornea. This flap is then removed without any pain and the corneal tissue which is present below is reshaped using another laser. The cornea is reshaped and the corneal flap is put back into place. The surgery takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.
Cataract surgery is performed when there is clouding of the lens in the eyes, causing loss of vision that cannot be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or corneal refractive surgery. The clouding of the lens during the formation of a cataract causes blurring and distortion of vision. Cataracts are very common, especially among the elderly.
The patient will be asked to lie down on the examination table. Two small incisions are made in the cornea. A thick glue like material is injected into the eye to help maintain its shape. Because it is thick, this material will not leak out of the incisions during surgery. A small probe that emits ultrasound waves is inserted through the cornea into the eye to break the affected lens into pieces. The pieces are then liquified and sucked out. After the affected lens is removed a new plastic lens is inserted in its place.
Glaucoma surgery is performed to reduce the pressure in the eyes by creating a new opening for the fluid to leave the eyes. In some cases surgery may be done to relieve pain caused by glaucoma. The surgery is performed to prevent the damage caused to ocular structures especially the optic nerve.
The glaucoma surgery involves either a laser treatment or an incision in the eye. The type of surgery the doctor recommends depends on the severity of the glaucoma. In case of the conventional surgery the doctor creates a small drainage hole and allows the intraocular fluid to bypass the clogged drainage canals and flow out of this new, artificial drainage canal.
